History: | "The name was derived from the court house built on the hill in 1898. In 1881 it was known as Knob Hill and Telegraph Hill and also as Navy Hill because of the Navy barracks built there that year. The miners referred to it as ""Chicken Ridge"". It was also known as ""Government Hill"" because it was a government reserve. About 1904 it was known locally as ""Horseshoe Hill"" probably for the Horseshoe Saloon located nearby. The southern part is known as ""Telephone Hill"" because of the telephone offices and exchange located here (De Armond, 1957, p. 12)." |
